Kimono Wednesday program prompts demonstrations at the Museum of Fine Arts.

June 24, 2015

The program allowed visitors to have their pictures taken wearing a museum-provided Japanese kimono in front of Claude Monet’s La Japonaise, a portrait of his wife Camille wearing similar garb. At a reception for outgoing director Malcolm Rogers, demonstrators protested that it perpetuated exoticized stereotypes of Asians and promoted what some called “Orientalism.” After another demonstration on July 1, 2015, the museum altered the program to allow the touching, but not wearing of the garment, for the three-weeks remaining in the program.
